What are domains?
In the Culture Monitor, domains can be compared to cultural 'disciplines' or 'subsectors'. The Culture Monitor currently contains information about the domains of Architecture, Audiovisual, Visual Arts, Design, Heritage, Games, Literature, Music, Performing Arts and Theatre. New domains or further breakdowns will be added in the future.
The various domain pages have a fixed layout. The pages successively offer a selection of key figures about the domain, describe the most important developments and identify which knowledge gaps still exist. This information is based on recent data, available literature and conversations with many stakeholders and experts.
Domains
Literature
The Literature domain page contains figures and information about the creators and readers of so-called general books, as well as about organisations such as publishers, bookstores and libraries that form the links between them.
Design
On the Design domain page, topics covered include the labour market, designers' problem-solving capacity, and trends such as bio-design and AI design. Other hot topics include social design and sustainability.
Games
On the Games domain page, we discuss developments in the production, distribution and consumption of digital games, as well as the infrastructure supporting them. As the games industry is inherently international, both Dutch and international data and insights are used.
Performing arts
The Performing Arts domain page provides figures on the number of performances and visits by discipline and the number of people employed in the performing arts.
Heritage
The Heritage domain page presents figures including the amount of movable and immovable heritage and discusses issues regarding the cultural significance of heritage and who defines what heritage is.
Visual arts
The Visual Arts domain page discusses developments around the (labour) market position of visual artists and the associated challenges. It also looks at museums, art consumption and digitisation, among other things.
Audiovisual
On the Audiovisual domain page, we present information on the distribution and consumption of feature films in particular via cinemas and streaming services. Attention is also paid to audiovisual production.
Architecture
The Architecture domain page mainly contains figures on the labour market and addresses developments such as the changing role of the architect in times of transition and fragmentation of the profession.
